Call for nominations to serve on the Board in 2025

ORRC wants you! If you like to have discussions about how to put on walking and running events, or if you just like talking about what’s happening with other fun and welcoming people, ORRC is accepting nominations (including self-nominations) to serve on the Board of Directors starting in January 2025. The Board meets once a month via Zoom on 2nd Tuesdays. We need opinions and feedback concerning races and policies of the club.

2024 is Last Year for Best Dam Run

ORRC plans to discontinue the Best Dam Run after this year. So, this September 14, 2024 is your last chance to run the BDR’s beautiful and fast course along the Clackamas River.

Due to lower participation and a lack of volunteers to take on race director responsibilities, ORRC is reluctantly cutting Best Dam Run from its racing calendar in 2025. So, let’s have it go out with a bang! If you have run this event in the past, you know what a great course this is, with 5 miles of it being mostly downhill and closed to vehicular traffic before finishing in downtown Estacada. ORRC Turkey Trot improved for 2024!

You can now register for the 2024 ORRC Turkey Trot! We’d like everyone to know we are planning for many improvements. The number of participants will be limited. We will have a fixed start time and have shortened the course slightly from 4 miles to 5 km (about 3.1 miles). The chocolate turkeys will be back and — new! — this year we’ll give out cute beanie hats to all participants. Read more.

Board Meeting Minutes and Recordings

A reminder that Board Meeting Minutes are posted online at our website, after approved by the board (which usually happens at the next meeting). Since last fall, the Board has also been recording the Zoom meetings and making these publicly available on YouTube. All members are welcome and encourage to attend board meetings, peruse the minutes, review the recordings and be involved!

Vernonia Marathon and Half Marathon coming on April 14

Imagine running a beautiful, tree-lined course along the 21-mile Banks-Vernonia State Trail. Both events feature a gentle 7-mile, 400-foot downhill into Banks.

New for 2024, the event is no longer cupless, and there are Marathon relay options for 2- or 4-person teams! Read more.

The ORRC Board welcomes you to join their board meetings. These meeting are open to anyone: All current members of the Oregon Road Runners Club, as well as the general public are welcome. 

ORRC Board Meetings recur on the Second Tuesday each month
NOTE: The Jan 9, 2024 Meeting included the Annual Meeting of the Membership.

The February meeting will be a special one. Led by Daniel Brewer, the new board will all be invited to participate in a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) analysis to discover more about the club’s qualities and how we’d like to improve and shape its direction.

Champoeg – 10K, 20K, 30K, Marathon Relay, and Kids’ Run (March)

The 10/20/30K structure is back for the 2024 ORRC Champoeg Runs! This means that in selecting to run the 10K, 20K or 30K, you will run one, two or three “loops” of the 10K course. If you haven’t run this since 2019, you are in for a treat, as the Ryan Creek Bridge was replaced in May 2019. Previously, the Ryan Creek Bridge had fallen into disrepair, making for a single-file crossing within the course the last few years through 2019 of this run. Runners and walker enjoy this setting for its history, natural setting, and recreational opportunities. The 10k course in Champoeg State Park runs through forests, fields, and wetlands. Read more.

Ralph’s Run (formerly Y2K) is on Saturday, January 6th, 2024. Do you want a PR (personal record)? Now is your chance! Do the 20.24 in 2024 for a guaranteed personal best. There will also be a 5K and a 10K and EVERYONE gets to run up that tricky hill at the end! There are pancakes for everyone after the event, and a family discount for people registering 3 or more in one household. There is even a free kids’ run so everyone can participate. ORRC Eco-Friendly Races (an update)

Beginning in 2021 ORRC tried a new method of offering water at aid stations by going “cupless”. We didn’t actually get rid of cups, but requested participants bring their own “vessel” to carry water or receive water at aid stations. As part of this “cupless” effort ORRC purchased re-usable cups and sent them to every ORRC member, and provided them at the start of every race at registration check-in.

Turkey Trot at the Oregon Zoo – November 28

The most popular ORRC race, the Columbia Bank / ORRC Turkey Trot at the Oregon Zoo is a multi-generational family event. Runners and walkers of all abilities love the 4-mile, untimed outing between the Oregon Zoo and the International Rose Gardens. Participants finish inside the zoo, much to the delight of two-legged and four-legged mammals alike. Click here to register.

ORRC Listening Session

Hooray for the weekend!

As many of you know, ORRC is in need of making some changes. Through a combination of the pandemic and evolution of time, we realize it’s time to do things differently.

As a member of ORRC, we’d love to hear directly from you. We’re planning at least one virtual listening session on Wednesday May 10th from 7pm to 8pm. During the session, you will have an open mic to talk about your ideas for the direction of the club. The session(s) will be recorded so the ideas can be collated and sent out in a future email.

If you are an ORRC member and would like to provide feedback at the ORRC Listening Session, please contact me at and I’ll assign you a time slot along with details about the meeting.

ORRC 2020 Summer Solstice 5K at the Zoo and July 4th 5K canceled.

Due to orders of the governor of Oregon to prohibit public gatherings due to the outbreak of COVID-19, ORRC has canceled its events in June and July 2020. These include the Summer Solstice 5K at the Oregon Zoo and our “5 on the 4th” 5K event on July 4th. Further event updates will be posted.
